Drill 1: Throwing Technique
Objective: Improve kette accuracy and aim, both from a stationary position and while moving.
Rules:
- Pick a post (a tree, pillar, lamppost, etc.) and mark at least three targets on it (for example, shoulder, hip, and feet).
- From a stationary position, throw at the targets.
- To increase difficulty, choose a narrower post, or practice while moving around the target, adjusting your aim and judging distances on the move.
- Practice different throw types each round (vertical, horizontal, or hammer), or mix throw types together once you have more control.
Benefits:
- Increases accuracy for both stationary and moving throws.
- Improves distance control and technique across different throwing styles.
Drill 2: Reload Speed
Objective: Increase kette reload speed to improve in-game efficiency.
Rules:
- Set a time limit using a stopwatch.
- Perform as many throws and reloads as possible within that time.
- You can throw into open air or aim at a post for a more realistic approach.
Benefits:
- Builds speed and coordination during reloading.
- Creates efficient habits for high-pressure in-game situations.
Drill 3: Throw and Reload with Reaction Time
Objective: Combine accuracy, reloading, and reaction time under external instructions.
Rules:
- Mark the targets on the post with numbers or colors to identify them.
- A coach or teammate calls out the next target while you’re reloading.
- Throw at the indicated target as soon as you’re ready to fire.
- Continue until you complete a set series of reps.
Benefits:
- Improves reaction to external cues.
- Develops an efficient technique that combines reloading, aim, and speed.
Drill 4: Aiming at a Moving Target
Objective: Practice more realistic throws by hitting a moving object without breaking the fluidity of the throw — in other words, aiming for a graze/brush hit.
Rules:
- Hang a weight from a fixed rope tied to a tall post.
- Try to hit the object as many times as possible without tangling the kette chain.
- For added difficulty, use an elastic band so the weight’s movements become more unpredictable.
Benefits:
- Improves accuracy in dynamic situations.
- Trains chain control to avoid technical errors.
Drill 5: Post Circuit
Objective: Combine the previous drills within an environment with multiple targets to simulate in-game situations.
Rules:
- Find an area with several nearby posts or trees (3-5 meters apart from each other).
- Combine the throwing, reloading, and reaction drills, moving between the different posts.
- Adjust distances and throw types based on the desired difficulty level.
Benefits:
- Simulates a more complex, challenging game environment.
- Reinforces the player’s accuracy, speed, and adaptability.
